Section IV of the Segarra-Garrigues Canal

Vicente Canales, S.A., is currently working on Section IV of the Segarra - Garrigues Canal. This section will supply water all the way to the intake in sector 7, covering a total irrigation area of 39,066 hectares (running from sectors 1 to 7). The action is some 21 kilometres in length and affects the municipalities of Tárrega, Verdú, San Martí de Riucorb and Maldá. Work starts at kilometre 41+ 530 on the Canal and finishes at kilometre 62 + 530, running Northeast to Southwest.20150114 122210

A flow measuring up to 20 m will run from the source to the so-called Almenara de Corb; from there to the end, the maximum flow reduces to 15 m. Two irrigation inlets to use the flow for irrigation will be placed in this section: Segarra-Garrigues Canal inlet no. 6, at kilometre 53, expected to have a flow of 5.5 m; and inlet no. 7 at kilometre 61 + 600, with a flow of 4 m.

The work currently being undertaken is for the following points:

- A new siphon with helical welded steel piping measuring 2540 mm in diameter and some 860 m long, between kilometres 59 + 392 and 60 + 252. This action is aimed at saving the River Corb and avoiding major impact on the countryside, aside from achieving a considerable reduction in costs compared with the initially planned construction of an aqueduct.

- Coupling and assembly of 160 metres of 1200 diameter piping.

- Production and assembly of the 4 steel transitions required to connect the pipe to the canal either side of the siphon.

The Segarra-Garrigues Canal project is in line with the A.G.U.A. Programme (Action for the Management and Use of Water) from the Ministry of the Environment, Marine and Rural Affairs. This programme favours actions to obtain water resources from new sources, ensuring the availability of water and permitting sustainable development.
